My Nightmare Move: A Realtor's Personal Journey

I've been holding back on sharing something with you, but today, I'm ready to open up about my own nightmare move. Today, I'm getting real, and honestly, I'm really nervous about sharing this.

We've made a lot of moves, and if you knew me when I was in California, you'd know about my crazy move to Sacramento as well. But the move I want to talk about today is the one that brought us cross-country, and it's a story I'm scared to share. I won't name names or point fingers, but I will share the truth because that's what you deserve from me, whether you're coming to me as a buyer or a seller.

The Beginning of the Pandemic

During the early days of the pandemic, my husband was offered a fantastic job in Columbia County, just outside Augusta. For him, a golf enthusiast, it was a dream come true. For me, it meant closing down my real estate and entertainment activities in Sacramento. We were also expecting our third child and had to prepare for the move in just three months, right in the peak season when all reputable movers are booked by military moves.

The Move Begins

Our initial excitement turned into a nightmare when our chosen moving company bailed and tried to extort more money from us. Eventually, we found a replacement mover at the last minute, but the process was far from smooth. I flew ahead, leaving my husband to deal with the movers, and was advised not to even ask how they packed our belongings.

Living in a hotel with two young children and pregnant with the third, we were anxious to close on a beautiful house we had fallen in love with. However, inspections revealed significant foundation issues that the seller initially agreed to fix but ultimately did not. This led to a heartbreaking decision to terminate the contract, a process complicated by legal and real estate nuances that differed greatly from what we were used to in California.

Finding the Silver Lining

In a miraculous turn of events, another house, which had always been available, became our new home. It was more than we ever hoped for, located in a charming neighborhood with friendly neighbors and kids the same age as ours. Despite the initial challenges, this move taught me valuable lessons about perseverance, trust, and the importance of working with ethical professionals.

The Aftermath

The moving company we ended up using lost and damaged many of our belongings. It was a devastating and awkward experience, but we managed to mitigate some losses through insurance. Despite everything, finding our perfect home made all the hardships worthwhile.
